I am intrigued by humanitys place in the natural world. My work uses the depiction of nature and objects as a metaphor for personal relationships and basic human emotions.
I like to paint and create in such a way that I dont get caught up in the details, to keep my momentum and capture the whatness of a thing the presence of that thing, living or not, moving or still, big or small, real or imaginary it makes no difference. Everything you can see or think of, you can draw in some sort of way. I respect that. Lets say I think Im sufferin - feel like Im suffocating. Then I might paint a tall glass of water, a girl with flowers in her mouth, or a rowboat sinking by a tree.
The stylized execution of my work echoes the immediacy of meaning inherent in folk art. I use a variety of traditional hand-crafts like sewing, embroidery, quilting and collage. These techniques serve to evoke the essence of a culture that can take care, mend, make-do, carry-on.
I wonder about the stamina of human relationships. I seek to represent their range of strength and frailty, and the constant flux there-in. I wonder about the stamina of the environment and draw parallels between our outward natural world and the internal human world.
When people see my work, Id like them to feel something basic, honest and altogether true - even when opposing ideas are presented, even when the subject matter is not real, even when the colors dont match your sofa they match the way you feel.
